What Makes a Good Book?

Last week, students were given reading surveys in which they responded to the question: "Do you like to read? Why or why not?"  There were many interesting comments about why we like to read.  Here are just a few:

"It's like watching a movie, but I can visualize it in my own way."
"It makes me think about how my life compares to the characters' lives."
"It takes me into another world."
"It takes me to new places and expands my vocabulary."
"It's a good way to pass the time."
"It inspires me to write."

However, by far the most common response to the question was something along the lines of:

"I like to read, but only if I'm reading a good book."

So what makes a book a good book?  How do you find one?  Leave comments with your responses.
(Try to add something new to the conversation or expand on what others have written.)

  1. What makes a good book well,it all has to do with the reader. You find a good book by searching what books you like to read, like fantasy, action or any kinds like that. To me I only like to read if I have a good book (which is rarely) but i really do like to read ALOT when i do have a good one. What also helps is looking at the first page and seeing if i get bored, so if you get bored then its not the book for you.

  2. What makes a good book is that the author describes what he means. For example, when an author writes a book he should describe the characters and the setting of the area. He should also describe the characters when they are doing actions. Instead of saying he walked over, the author should write how he walked over, for example he hurried over or he over sadly with his head down. Another thing that makes a book good for me is the type of genre. If the authr writes a certain type of book that I don't like then I can't really get into the book. In my opinion these 2 things ware what make a book good.

  3. What makes a book a good book is what you like to read. It can differ from the genre to who wrote the book. For example, I like to read fantasy or real fiction, so those books are 'good books' in my opinion. A good book is also where you can picture a clear, vivid image of what you are reading in your mind. You can find a good book by trying new authors, taking recommendations from friends or family, or finding a book in a genre that you like. Books that are suspenseful and leave you wanting to read more are good books.

  4. a good book depends on the induvisul such as if you are reading a book that is to easy or to hard for you you probably won't enjoy it. also it depends on what genre you like to read some people like to read realisitc fiction while others lke to read action or scifi. so it all depends on the induvisal

  5. A good book to me is probably hard to find because I never really prefered anything I've just read to read. The book I'm currently reading is " Zach's Lie." It's a really great book and it's easy to read for those who don't like books with words you wouldn't hear everyday. To find a good book I would just ask for recommendations from teachers or peers. My steps to a good book, if you get bored on the first five pages its not good. If you can't put it down and can vision it in your head it's a great book for you.

  6. What makes a good book is a combination of reader's preferance, an author's skill, and subject matter. I relate a book to a living, breathing animal. The book has to have a solid skeleton before the muscles, organs and other soft-tissues can be composed. The plot is the skeleton, and the rest of the body is formed by characters, details, settings and dialog. The words in the book should be like music; fluid and ongoing. They shouldn't be choppy or boring sections in between.

  7. A good book completly depends on the reader. This is because everybody is different and has different interests, therefore nobody likes exactly the same genre of books. To find a good book you have to read many different genres and find which ones you like the best, then find books in those genres. Also if somebody says a book is bad, don't let that stop you from reading it because you may like different books then them.

  8. A good book is one that captures your attention and you don't want to put it down. The book has to be interesting and make you think. It also depends on what type of books you like. There are many types of books such as mystery, comedy, action, adventure, etc. Good books don't have to be the ones that just came out or the book that everyone is reading. It only matters if YOU enjoy reading it.

  9. What make a good book to me is, when the author makes it interesting. By comedy, mystery, or any other genres. My favorite genres are comedy and mystery. The reason I like comedy is because I like to have some laughs sometimes. The reason I
like mystery is because I like to try to figure things out. I like for the books to have characters with good sense of humor. Details to help you figure something out. Settings and dialog. All of these things will make a good book.

  10. A good book in my opinion consists of knowledge from the author, a main idea to support all of the text. Also a good book has to have a title and a story to follow the title. Details need to be current in the story to help support the main idea. The author needs to make the book their own, meaning that they have a specific style of writing and the way they say things has to be specific to the authors taste. A good book needs to have a genre, chosen by the author, but, for the reader to enjoy.

  11. How a good book is found as if it pulls me in early on in the book. Otherwise I just get bored reading the samething over and over again. Also if it's in my genre of what kind out books I like if It's not then I really don't want to read it because it's just not that intersting to me as a book that I would like

  12. A good book, to me, is very complex and has a new twist at every turn. When a book is full of suprises it makes it harder and harder to put down because you just HAVE to read one more page.Another thing that makes a book into a good book is what you take out of it. the author of a book usually writes a story with the intent of you taking something from it, with a lot books you only get as much as you give.Books usually have some hidden lesson just waiting for the reader to find it.

  13. i think a good book is, when you can actualy get into the book and its hard to stop reading them. ways i find my books are asking people what books have they read and ask them wich one is the best or sometimes i read the back of some books. some of my favorite genres are sience ficton, rielistic ficton and sports fiction.

  14. What makes a good book is a sense of direction, like a book thet doesnt jump around and talk about difrent things at once.
I think good book is someting that gets you to come back and read, and continue from where you left off like a cliffhanger.

  15. There are no good books. A single book can not, by nature be better than another. In reality there is no discernable difference between say, "The Butter Battle Book" and a bioagraphy on the latest US President. They both use the english language, cover a topic, and are based off of the same basic rules of language. So a book, by nature, is never better than another. A book is only as good as you decide it to be. You personally are the one who labels a book good or bad, and cannot do so for anyone other than yourself. So if you enjoyed reading a book, then that is a good book for you, but it may not be for another person. The quality of a book is created by you, and it is impossable to force that opinion onto anyone else.

  16. Creativity and and passion is what makes a good book also if the author knows how to capture your interests. Some other things that make a good book are if the words and phrases make the book come alive and helps you visualize the stting. How to find a good book is going to the library and looking for a topic you like. Then you should look for an author you enjoy to read, but you can always read the back of the books if you think you have found one you might enjoy.

  17. To me, a good book makes you want to keep reading and you don't want to put it down because it keeps you hooked.

  18. I think a good book has to have pictures, i say this becuase picts help me understand nd vizualize wats going on in the book. Most books i read don't have pictures (idk y) so i have trouble undestanding wats up in the book.

  19. A good book has a strategy to keep me interested throughout the entire story. For example, last year, when I read "Troy High", I could easily keep up with the happenings in the story and be completely interested at the same time. The author's way of showing had the protagonist of the story lead me through the characters and settings of the story, and I could easily remember everything. In conclusion, I believe that a "good book" should hook you from the start, and keep you fully interested and kept up the entire time.

  20. I agree with the past comment, the fact that someone likes a book or not depends solely on them. If someone doesn't like a book, but I like it, does that make my opinion wrong, or that I should have a better opinion? I don't think so. So as mentioned by someone else, you like a book, good. Go ahead and read. Though don't try to force an opinion on me because I may not like it.:)

  21. a good book to me depends on the book. A good book depends opon what the reader thinks/likes about the book. A good book is one you just can't put down! It has you hooked and you're just wondering what will happen next. Only you can decide if you really like the book because everyone has a certain type of book they like. Sometimes you may have a certain author you like rather than the genre.

  22. When mrs.O talked about some of the answers she got on the reading surveys of why some students like to read i thought to my self all of those answer are what makes a book a good book. A good book has to make a movie in my mind and take me to anther place. Also a good book really has to make me think, because if im not thinking about the book i'm think about what i'm doing later. But first you have to find a book and a way to find a good book is to ask a friend who like the same things you do, or read the back cover or frist page and see if you want to read more.

  23. I mostly agree with Kevin a good book is what captures your attention and something you just have to read. a good would have something that is just unexpected, something that makes you wanna say "NO WAY I didn't see that comeing." a good book got to have something that u can never see comeing...something that makes you think so hard.:]

  24. What makes a good book is if its action packed from start to finish. Also what makes a good book is it pulls you in with some kind of mystery or puzzle.

  25. It hink what makes a good book is it catchs peoples eyes. And is interesting very goood that u dont wanna put it down. For example i read twilight and it was very good it had a little bit of fairy tail in it and thats what i like in books

  26. What makes a good book is its cover. Although I have to admit that sometimes I judge a book by its cover, I usually always find a book that has a cover to pull me in. It is also good to read the back or inside cover just to give you an overview about what you are about to read. Also, books that pull you in on the first couple of pages is a keeper because it usually gets even better from there.

  27. A good book is something that a reader can learn from and enjoy. Also I agree with matt and kevin because a book has to capture your attention and make you want to read, with action, drama and fun within every chapter. I personally like sports books and action books, so a story for me would be an action packed adventure or a baseball book that teaches me new things about the players.

  28. A good book has alot of meaning behind it. Every scentence, every character, has emotions that pull you in. When you can connect to how that character is feeling, and empathize with them and say to yourself "yeah, I know EXACTLY how they are feeeling!" even when your life is nothing like the character's. A good book, well, at least, a good fictional book, can take you away, and make you feel anything.

  29. A good book is when the author has such great deatail that you feel your in the book. When I am reading a good book I feel like one of the charters in the backround watching everything happen. I know when I have picked a good book because I spend hours reading it and I dont want to do anything else but read. Suspense can also make a good book becasue you cant wait to find out what happens nexts that you dont want to put the book down.

  30. A good book is when the first sentence makes you just want to keep reading and reading. It will alwasy keep you on the edge of your seat. The person reading the book should feel like he or she is actually one of the characters in the book. Each chapter should finish should leave you curious of finding out whats next.

  31. A good book actually depends on you. To me a good book is something that i can picture the actions in my head and a book that i can be inspired. Good books are like movies in your head but only you can see. Good books are the kind of books that you can't seem to pull your face away from. Good books are books you get caught in. :)

  32. A good book to me is when the author uses good detail to where you can see the picture in your mind. The author also makes you think about what is happening and make predictions and observations. You know you have choose a good book when you can't put it down. Each person has a different perspective on what makes a good book and it will depend on the reader as much as the author.

  33. A good book is one that speaks to the reader and connects to them in one way or another. Even if someone says that they only like action books maybe its because they wished they had more action in their lives and live the action through the character. Maybe a person who likes romance can relate to the situation the character is going through and maybe it helps them with their problems they are having in THEIR lives. A good book to me is one where I can live the life of the main character and where i can visualize what goes on in their life.

  34. A good book is one that you can't put down. In my opinion a good book would have action. Another good book for me is non-fiction.

  35. The makings of a 'good' book changes from person to person. Some would say they like pictures, others would say they like lots of explanations. I think that a good book has to catch my attention and make me regret putting it down. I like suspense, horror or action books. But thats just me. :)

  37. a good book is a book that pulls you into the story and makes you never want to finish. it's the type of story that makes you think and relate deeper to the text. when i read a good book i am always looking out for a sequal to it or waiting for the rest of the series come out. that's what i think a good book is.

  38. What makes a good book is the author and weather or not the authors words pull you into the story and make you think about what your reading. Also a good book is a book that could be a classic or a book someone sugest for you. A good book is also a book that you as a reader would want to read.

  39. A good book is your own opinion, it will always have you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. Sometimes you have to give your book time to impress you. You should at least keep going with it until the 1st or 2nd chapter to see if it gets better. My idea of a good book is something that relates to me. Something that is NOT scary and nothing thats murder mystery or anything..but thats just me :)

  40. What makes a good book is determined by the reader and what they like to read. A good book for me would have to be a good plot. To me, in a story without a objective or an objective without a purpose is pointless. I think a good story is a story where the reader can watch the character grow and change in the book. To me, a main character without a purpose to do what they are doing makes a bad story.

  41. A good book takes me a away from the grind of daily life. I can see into the characters mind and hear their thoughts, feel their emotions. I can travel with the character and see places I have never been. I enjoy humor and those not so funny things that still make us laugh.

  42. A good book is a book that I would enjoy reading. This would mean that I can visualize pictures in my head, and know exactly what is going on in the story. Visualizing the charcaters and what they look like.

  43. A good book is one that is filled with suspense and makes you want to read forever. Also, the characters seem like real people and you end up getting sucked into the story of their lives.
I usually find a good book searching up my favorite authors, or by asking friends and librarians what books they like.

  44. I think a good book will have a part where the reader has to infer. I think I should have to infer and use my background knowledge, and context clues, so that I can better improve my understanding of infering. Infering in a book also sounds like the author is trying to show and not tell. Showing and not telling is also a good thing to, because you want to give the reader a clear visualization in their head.

  46. For me what makes a good book depnds on a couple of things. 1.) The reader
2.) The type of genres the reader likes
3.)If the author descibed the story to the point I feel like I am actually there.
